京の都を焼き尽くした十年に渡る内乱 “応仁の乱” により幕府の権威は失墜し、その勢力は著しく衰えていった。 幕府の統制力が次第に失われるなか、諸国に蔓延していく下克上の風潮は止めようがなく、一揆によって守護職支配が否定され、守護大名は官僚の支配に抵抗し、そして官僚は将軍を追放した。 この混乱の時代の中、自らの力で家臣団を編制し、武器を整備し、自国を治める戦国大名と呼ばれる者たちが台頭を始めた。 北条、上杉、今川、毛利、大友、織田、島津、佐竹、伊達、武田… 時を同じくして全国に名乗りを上げた数多の戦国大名たちは、自らの敵を戦で打ち破り、そして敵城を落城させ、時には同盟を締結し、それぞれが混乱の時代を生き抜くために自国の領土を広げていった。 そして一部の先覚者たちは、ある事実に気付き始めていた。 ――鎌倉幕府も足利幕府も一御家人が興したものに過ぎない。 ならば己も同様に、自らの力で全ての国を従えて、 “天下” を “統一” することが出来るのではないかと… かくして後世に“戦国時代”と呼ばれる長い戦乱の世の幕が今、切って落とされた。
